Over Twenty Reported Dead in Mexico Supermarket Explosion

(MENAFN) At least 23 people were killed Saturday when an explosion ripped through a Waldo's supermarket in Hermosillo, northwestern Sonora state, according to local media reports.

The blast followed a fire at the store, with preliminary accounts indicating that more than 10 others were injured. Official death toll figures have not yet been released.

Authorities have since contained the fire and launched an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion. A gas leak or fuel buildup is reportedly one of the scenarios being examined, according to a newspaper.

The Sonora public security secretariat dismissed the possibility of a deliberate attack, stating on social media platform X that it ruled out “an attack or an event related to a violent act against civilians."

President Claudia Sheinbau offered condolences to the victims, writing on X: "I have been in contact with the governor of Sonora, Alfonso Durazo, to provide support as needed. I instructed the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodriguez, to send a support team in order to assist the families and the injured."
