Supermarket explosion claims twenty-three lives in Mexico

(MENAFN) At least 23 people lost their lives and more than 10 others were injured on Saturday following an explosion at a supermarket in Hermosillo, located in Mexico’s northwestern Sonora state, according to reports.

The blast erupted after a fire broke out inside a Waldo’s store. Emergency services managed to contain the blaze, and authorities have opened an investigation to determine what triggered the explosion.

Preliminary assessments suggest that a gas leak or buildup of fuel may have caused the incident, according to local media. The Sonora Public Security Secretariat stated on social media that the explosion was not linked to any attack or deliberate act of violence.

President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her condolences to the victims and said she had spoken with Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo to coordinate assistance. “I have been in contact with the governor of Sonora, Alfonso Durazo, to provide support as needed. I instructed the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodriguez, to send a support team in order to assist the families and the injured," she wrote on X.
